“There is no compelling reason to cut,” said Loretta Mester, who retired as president of the Cleveland Fed in June. “I would want to see convincing evidence that inflation has resumed moving down and right now, I don’t think we have that.”

Sen. Paul subpoenas 14 agencies over Covid origin

- The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee subpoenaed 14 agencies in mid-January about the origin of Covid-19 and risky research conducted at a lab in China with U.S. funding, its chair, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), announced Monday.
- The list of agencies includes the National Institutes of Health, the State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Department of Health and Human Services, the FBI and the CIA, among others.
- The subpoenas were issued in the last days of the Biden administration and before the CIA announced it had decided that it was more likely a lab leak that caused the pandemic than an infected animal that spread the virus to people. Previously, the CIA had said it couldn’t conclude with certainty how the pandemic started.
- Paul said he still needs answers about who at NIH allowed U.S. funds to be spent at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Chinese research facility in the city where Covid first emerged, in the wake of former President Joe Biden giving a preemptive pardon to Anthony Fauci, the long-time director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

- Federal Judge Amit Mehta has been forced to withdraw his order banning Oath Keeper founder Stewart Rhodes and others from not only the US Capitol but the entirety of Washington, DC. Judge Mehta issued the order after reports came that he was meeting with members of Congress.
- “The court hereby amends the conditions of supervised release for Defendants Stewart Rhodes” and co-defendants, Mehta said in a one-page order effective noon Friday. “You must not knowingly enter the District of Columbia without first obtaining the permission from the Court. … You must not knowingly enter the United States Capitol Building or onto surrounding grounds known as Capitol Square.”

- Mehta was trying to use an interpretation of Trump’s commutation order that only acknowledged the release from prison and kept them under “supervised release.”
That did not last long: Trump’s US Attorney for the District of Columbia quickly responded:
The Court entered an Order dated January 24, 2025 Amending Conditions of Release (ECF 940). The defendants, however, are no longer subject to the terms of supervised release and probation, as the Executive Order “commute(d) the sentences” of these defendants. As the terms of supervised release and probation are included in the “sentences” of the defendants, the Court may not modify the terms of supervised release; the term is no longer active by effect of the Executive Order. See United States v. Haymond, 588 U.S. 634, 648 (2019) (Supreme Court has acknowledged “that an accused’s final sentence includes any supervised release sentence he may receive” and therefore “supervised release punishments arise from and are treat[ ed] as part of the penalty for the initial offense”) (cleaned up)).
The United States hereby indicates that the Order must be vacated.

- A USAID sThe Trump administration has ordered dozens of top career employees of the U.S. Agency for International Development to go on administrative leave, according to six people told of the decision.
- The order — sent via email to members of the senior executive and senior Foreign Service — was issued close to the end of the business day Monday and was effective immediately, according to two current USAID officials and three former USAID officials told of the communication. It comes as USAID and the State Department have been ordered to impose halts on a vast number of humanitarian and related programs around the world.

- President Trump has ordered as many as 60 senior bureaucrats in the US Agency for International Development placed on indefinite leave for taking actions to evade his executive orders. A memo from acting USAID administrator Jason Gray says, “We have identified several actions within USAID that appear to be designed to circumvent the president’s executive orders and the mandate from the American people.“ As a result, we have placed a number of USAID employees on administrative leave with full pay and benefits until further notice while we complete our analysis of these actions.”
